Up early ish on a Saturday and in Richmond, we headed to Pillar of Salt for breakfast. We had to wait on the corner for about ten minutes before a table outside became free. This was made less tedious by the sunshine and the blue sky. Not a good option if it was cold, grey or wet. Another popular place in Melbourne, there were lots of people hanging around. Girlfriends gathering, couples dating, dogwalkers pausing, cyclists resting....a whole buzz of activity.
This meant that service wasn't the quickest and was more practical than personable but it did the job. It did take a while for us to order and then for the food to arrive which isn't a problem for a weekend breakfast which is all about being leisurely but it is hard to relax when there are always people milling about queuing for a table. I always feel under pressure to eat quickly and vacate when I see people waiting so it made it hard for me to feel at ease.
Steve had the beans on toast with chorizo sausage and a poached egg and I went with smashed tomatoes, mozzarella, poached eggs and bacon. We both got through our plates with gusto all washed down with orange juice and tea.
Another good breakfast joint and a reliable option if in the area.
