In the Bleak Midwinter...

No more sleeping with the windows open and there's even been occasion to wrap up with a blanket on the sofa as Winter draws near. Yet my Facebook feed shows loved ones on their Summer holidays and celebrating 4th of July!

4th of July weekend here was wet and windy. Not quite snow or frosty mornings but definitely fresh. We celebrated 4th of July on 6th of July at a local absinthe and cocktail bar with a huge smoker in the courtyard and warmed ourselves up with pulled pork. brisket, cornbread, potato salad and other such American fayre accompanied by a brass band. And there probably was not one American there! Any excuse to spend a Sunday afternoon in a pub!

Colder weather has meant staying in a bit more especially as we have some weekends away and a holiday planned in the next 3 months.

Saturday was one of those market and cooking days. Steve excelled himself with an Asian menu starting with Thai fishcakes that look a little over done in this picture but that wasn't the case. His little dipping sauce with cucumber and chillis was delicious.

Main course was Beggar's Chicken which is a variation of the ubiquitous soya sauce chicken. This version was heavily scented with cinammon and star anise. Our veggie accompaniments was broccolini stirfried with balsamic vinegar, anchovies and weirdly enough Parmesan. Italian ingredients but Asian undertone and the tangy vinegar accompanied the sweet soy chicken.

And this Italian Asian affair continued through to dessert where we had Kaffir lime and coconut panna cotta, lime syrup and fresh strawberries. Delight in a glass!

As we get to grips with Winter, I mentioned others are enjoying the Northern hemisphere Summer. And Amelia has had a week in Marjorca indulging in ice cream, donkey rides, face paints, swimming pools, parks and having what looks like an excellent time with her mummy and daddy!
