I'll be managing a contract and supplying office workers to various government departments. It suits me because the contract has already been secured and I will represent one of three consultancies on the agreement so there is an element of competition but not so much that I have to initiate a lot of cold sales.
Looking back at my time in recruitment in UK, I can say that I did enjoy the fast paced nature of the industry and the fact that it is results driven. However, I didn't enjoy the lack of respect and reputation it has in UK, the hard sales element of it and the long hours. I think the role I have taken naturally doesn't have these challenges and I also think in Australia it's a little different so I'm optimistic it will suit me. As for the long hours, I fully expect that there will be some long days but I'm pretty sure it will be manageable. There seems to be a culture of working long hours when required but taking it easier when it's possible. It helps that the office is a mere 10 minute walk from home!
The team I have joined are all girls and they seem fun. There is a Christmas night out on Friday so it will be good to see them let their hair down. My director is someone who reminds me so much of one of the best managers I've had the privilege of working with. Even their handwriting is similar! I hope she will continue to inspire me. Having worked for non inspiring managers I really value the support a good manager can give.
My first day has been a little bit of a shock to the system. It's not because of the job but more about being in an office environment in corporate attire. I've been a lady of leisure for 6 weeks and my last job was at a design agency where it was casual dress so it's been a while since the suits and heels have had an airing! At the same time it was exciting to be in an office where there's a buzz and people are tapping frantically at a keyboard logging activity and talking on the phone.
My desk was laden with goodies ready for my arrival; brand new stationery and all that paraphernalia. All essential to settling in! I was also given a water bottle, a set of headphones, a Rubik's cube and reuseable shopping bag. A bit random but all gratefully received!
So all in all it was a good day and I'm happy to return tomorrow! Non work related, Steve got a gas tank for our new BBQ so hopefully we'll be able to have some BBQ fun this week. Will let you know how that goes.
