Little Nyonya

Midweek dinner and I wanted to try Little Nyonya in Docklands.

It was empty when we arrived but by the time we left there was one large party and a couple of smaller groups.

Situated on the waterfront it's been made to look at like a traditional Chinese inn. The fit out is done well and it looks inviting and a pleasant place to eat.

There are also tables outside closer to the waterfront.

There is a big menu on display just outside of the inside dining hall. It has pictures of delicious looking dishes and lots of choice. However we are told that that is the lunch menu and the dinner menu is actually one laminated piece of paper with a much smaller range of dishes at a higher price.

We noticed that the large menu actually confused a few people who came to eat whilst we were there and the wait staff had to explain every time that the menu wasn't in operation. Perhaps they should take it away during dinner service?

I guess because of its location in Docklands, the lunch trade must be busier and more lucrative than a dinner service.

Anyway we decided to sit outside and enjoy the view. Our drinks orders were taken quite quickly. I had a teh tahrik and Steve had water. The teh tahrik was pretty authentic and not too sweet.

We orderd the chicken stay sticks, beef rendang and Hainanese steamed chicken. Steve had coconut rice and I went for chicken rice.

The large party had pre ordered so we had to wait for all their food to come out before our's arrived. Once the food started coming out for them, all the waitstaff concentrated on the large table so it was hard to get someone's attention to get some water. We also toyed with ordering some veggies but because we couldn't get the attention of a waiter we decided to let it go.

Our food came whilst they still had to serve the large table and because the waitstaff were concentrating on that we had to wait and remind a passing waiter to bring us some cutlery and chilli sauce for the chicken.

Portion size was pretty decent except for the satay sticks. The beef was tender but the flavour was not as deep and satisfying and as creamy as it could have been. The steamed chicken had been deboned and was acceptable. It would have been nicer with some more soy sauce I think.

The food was passable. If you compromise the surroundings, you can get cheaper and better in the CBD. We probably wouldn't repeat the experience out of choice. Maybe it's better at lunchtime. The view and surroundings are really pleasant though and we enjoyed watch the sunset over the water.

Steakhouse

We were in Docklands with some friends and had watched the free fireworks and had a bellyful to drink. Chris really wanted steak and the poor guy hadn't eaten all day so we were happy to indulge. With the help of his iPhone, which died mid research, and Cam's iPhone we stumbled across this place.

The welcome was friendly and food was soon ordered and wine was being poured. The food took a while to arrive in spite of the place being very quiet but that was probably because Cam had ordered ribs which takes longer to cook.

Chris got his steak, porterhouse with a peppercorn sauce. I had eye fillet with a mushroom sauce. Cam had the ribs and Karly ordered a Wagyu burger. Steve wasn't hungry having had a late lunch so ordered the mushrooms with goat's cheese in a tomato stew. We shared shoestring fries and onion rings.

Admittedly expectations were not high given we pretty much just wandered in and the place was quiet but we were all pretty impressed with our food. My steak was tender and juicy. The mushroom sauce was more a thin jus so that was a bit meh. It came with a small jacket potato with sour cream which was delicious. The onion rings were epic - huge, crispy and golden. Chris steak craving was satisfied. Cam cleared his plate and what was left of Karly's and Steve enjoyed his mushrooms so all in all thumbs up.

The things that weren't so great about the meal was I asked for some salt for my potato and that didn't arrive till half way through the meal and it came in a little dish so it appears they don't have salt cellars. Service started off well but by the time we finished and wanted the bell it took a long time to get someone's attention as everyone was too busy cleaning up. The decor of the restaurant is a little cafeteria / canteen like and there is no atmosphere which is a shame as the quality of the food could make it more of a destination restaurant if the ambience was better. The restaurant has great water views so they could make more of it.
