It's decked out like an old Chinese inn from those king fu movies I used to watch with my sister. There's a kitchen you can look into where the chefs are making dumplings and noodles and other goodies. I feel I have an affiliation with Shanghai cuisine too given my maternal family is from Shanghai.
We ordered xiao long bao which are in the picture above. They are little dumplings and have soup and a tasty meat filling in them. They require certain technique to eat them though so as not to lose the soupy goodness.
What was interesting was seeing the number of non Asian people here enjoying the food and ordering the authentic stuff a bit like our yum cha experience. There was this lady and her daughter perhaps and they were eating Chinese cold cuts which isn't for everyone and tofu with preserved egg which definitely is one which sorts the men from the boys given the egg is a brown gelatinous and oozy mess that is strongly flavoured.
Hu Tong we'll be back and I can't wait to bring Mummy Chan!
