Richmond Hill Cafe and Larder

Public holidays are made for long brunches and relaxation and Labour Day 2013 was no different. We took a leisurely drive out and stopped at RHCL for sustenance.

It was getting increasingly hot and uncomfortable outside so lucky for us there was a table for two inside which was nice and cool.

Service was prompt and efficient and we placed drinks orders before considering the menu. It was midday and we could have gone for brunch options or lunch options.

We decide to share the grilled cheese on toast and I went with the eggplant and chilli chutney and Steve went chutney less.

Oh it was so delicious - just the right amount and strength of cheese on nutty bread and I loved the sweet heat from the chutney along with the texture of the eggplant. A true hit!

We then decided to go with egg options although our neighbours choices of charcuterie and burger looked great.

Steve went with baked beans braised with ham hock and topped with melted Comte cheese and a poached egg. I went with dukkah crusted poached eggs on toasts with Meredith goats cheese, tomato relish and asparagus spears and I added some bacon as every breakfast plate needs a bit of pig and Steve had his ham hock!

Both simple dishes but done so well and so tasty. Eggs were cooked perfectly with oozy yolks, bacon was crispy round the edges, spinach wasn't soggy and didn't cause the toast to get wet. I also had a coffee which was delicious. Our only slight quibble was that our freshly squeezed orange juices tasted a little watery either too much ice or watered down.

The atmosphere feels like a bustling French bistro - I can't quite decide or Provence. Paris because it was so bustling and busy; Provence because it was laid back and relaxed.
