The Goose - Busselton

En route to Margaret River from Freo we stopped in Busselton for lunch. Not knowing where was good we stumbled across The Goose and it's location right on the seafront with a view of the jetty appealed to us so we thought we'd give it a whirl.

We took a table with a view but unfortunately it was a bad choice as there was a draught every time the main door opened. We persevered though as we really wanted the window seat.

We were quickly served with water and our food order taken. I went with one of the fish specials which was barramundi with new potatoes, caprice salad and a caper butter sauce. Steve went for the linguine pasta with white anchovies, asparagus, smokey pancetta lardons, poached egg and crispy breadcrumbs.

The food took a good 30 minutes to arrive and the place wasn't that busy. Under normal circumstances this would displease me but given Steve had to make a work related phone call and was gone a while and I had my Kindle to keep me entertained, the 30 minutes went by quickly.

Our plates of food were pretty delicious. The barra came with a crispy skin and the flesh was soft and sweet. I love a piece of well cooked barra and this satisfied. Steve enjoyed the pasta and I thought it would be a mish mash of overwhelming flavours but actually it all worked well together as a highly seasoned, rich pasta dish.

We were tempted into dessert and the menus were left but it was a while before the waitress returned to take the order.

I ventured to the cake cabinet to make a dessert choice and went for what I thought was the lumberjack cake with toffee sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

It took a long time to arrive - 20 minutes or so and I asked the waitress who went to check but then didn't tell me how much longer it was going to take. Pet hate of mine is wait staff that don't follow up and this happenede a few times here. If you leave a menu, you return in 5 minutes to take the order. If you are asked a question, you return with the answer rather than leave customers waiting. Maybe I come from the strict school of waitressing...

Anyway the cake finally arrived and although it looked good, it wasn't the one I ordered or the one that was labelled lumberjack cake so obviously the signs in the chiller cabinet don't match the cakes. But given we'd been here far too long already, I didn't want to speak to another disinterested waitress. I enjoyed the coconut topping of the cake but I'm not a huge fruit in cake fan so the bottom layer failed to excite me. Steve gave it a go though.

Not a cheap place to dine and for the price, the food is good but the service needs to crank it up a notch. Needs to be friendlier, more attentive, smilier just needs to be more!
